One of the most exciting times at Rainbow Ridge Farms is kidding season! We raise award-winning dairy goats and are actively involved in 4-H, helping local kids learn responsibility, animal care, and the rewards of raising and showing their own goats.

Our 4-H members work hard with their goats throughout the year, and one of the most memorable parts of that experience is helping their goats deliver their babies. Our more experienced 4-H members are encouraged to take the lead during kidding, giving them a valuable opportunity to build confidence and develop their animal-care skills. We appreciate our guests respecting and supporting these young farmers as they learn.

Can guests watch a baby goat being born? YES, SOMETIMES!

Over the years, many of our guests have joined us in the barn to experience the excitement of kidding season. We often hear these questions:

• When will the babies be born? We can estimate due dates based on breeding dates, usually within about five days.

• Can I watch a goat give birth? If the timing is right and circumstances allow, you may have the opportunity!

• Will you wake me up if a goat is having a baby in the middle of the night? We cannot promise a wake-up call, but you never know what excitement the morning might bring!

• Can I help? Depending on the situation, there may be opportunities to observe or participate under our guidance.

A goat's pregnancy typically lasts about 150 days. Since we know when our goats were bred, we can estimate their due dates fairly closely. Our kidding calendar lists confirmed pregnancies and approximate due dates.

Remember: Baby goats can arrive about five days before or five days after their estimated due date. Nature follows its own schedule, so kidding season keeps us on our toes!
